Setting up your MSR606H doesn't have to be complicated. This MSR606H installation and setup guide walks you through everything — from unboxing to your first successful card read — in clear, numbered steps. Whether you're a technician configuring hardware for a client or a hobbyist getting started with magnetic stripe cards, you'll be operational in under 30 minutes.

What You'll Need

Before you begin, gather the following:

  • MSR606H hardware unit (USB connection)
  • Windows PC running Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11 (32-bit or 64-bit)
  • MSR606H software — download it from MSR606H Software before starting
  • A blank or test magnetic stripe card (Track 1/2/3 compatible)
  • An active USB port (USB 2.0 or higher)
  • Administrator privileges on your Windows account
  • (Optional) A card you want to read or clone for testing

Step 1: Download the MSR606H Software

Go to MSR606H Software and complete your purchase. You'll receive a download link via PayPal confirmation. Save the installer to a location you can easily find — your Desktop works well.

Do not plug in the hardware yet. Installing software before connecting the device prevents Windows from loading the wrong default driver.

Pro Tip: Disable your antivirus temporarily during installation. Security software sometimes flags card reader drivers as suspicious due to their low-level USB access — this is a false positive. Re-enable it once setup is complete.

Step 2: Run the Installer

  1. Right-click the downloaded installer file and select Run as administrator
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts — accept the license agreement and choose your install directory (the default is fine for most users)
  3. When prompted to install drivers, click Yes or Install
  4. Wait for the installer to finish — this typically takes 1–3 minutes
  5. Do not restart your computer yet if the installer asks — wait until after you plug in the device

If Windows Defender or SmartScreen shows a warning, click More info → Run anyway. The software is not signed with a major certificate authority, which triggers this warning on unsigned executables — it does not indicate malware.

Step 3: Connect the MSR606H to Your Computer

With the software installed:

  1. Plug the MSR606H into an available USB port
  2. Windows will detect new hardware and attempt driver installation automatically
  3. Wait 15–30 seconds for the device to initialize
  4. Open Device Manager (right-click Start → Device Manager) and look under Ports (COM & LPT) — you should see a new COM port listed (e.g., COM3 or COM4)

If the device appears under Other Devices with a yellow warning triangle, the driver did not install correctly. See the Troubleshooting section below.

Pro Tip: Note the COM port number assigned to your MSR606H. You'll need it when configuring the software. If multiple COM ports are listed, unplug the device, note which ports remain, then reconnect — the new entry is your MSR606H.

Step 4: Launch the Software and Configure the COM Port

  1. Open the MSR606H software from your desktop shortcut or Start menu
  2. Navigate to Settings or Port Configuration (exact label depends on software version)
  3. Select the COM port number you identified in Step 3
  4. Set the baud rate to 9600 if prompted (this is the standard rate for this hardware)
  5. Click Connect or Open Port

A status indicator — usually a green light or "Connected" text — confirms the software is communicating with the device.

Step 5: Test a Card Read

With everything connected and configured:

  1. Insert a magnetic stripe card into the MSR606H slot, stripe facing the correct direction (check the arrow printed on the device)
  2. Swipe the card through at a smooth, consistent speed — not too fast, not too slow
  3. The software should display the raw track data in the output window

You'll typically see three tracks of data:

Track Standard Data Typical Use
Track 1 Alphanumeric, 79 chars max Name, account number
Track 2 Numeric only, 40 chars max Account number, expiry
Track 3 Numeric only, 107 chars max Banking/extended data

If track data appears garbled or incomplete, see Troubleshooting below.

Step 6: Test a Card Write

Writing to a card verifies that the encode head is functioning correctly:

  1. Insert a blank or rewritable magnetic stripe card
  2. In the software, navigate to the Write tab
  3. Enter test data into the track fields — keep it short for a first test (e.g., %TEST123^SAMPLE^? for Track 1)
  4. Click Write and swipe the card through the device when prompted
  5. Once the write completes, switch to the Read tab and swipe the same card
  6. Confirm the data you wrote matches what the software reads back

A successful read-back confirms both the read and write heads are working correctly.

Pro Tip: Always verify a write immediately after encoding. Magnetic stripe cards can have dead spots, especially on lower-quality stock. Testing right away saves time if a card needs to be re-encoded.

Step 7: Adjust Track Settings (Optional)

The MSR606H supports three coercivity types depending on your card stock:

  • Lo-Co (Low Coercivity): ~300 Oe — common for hotel keys, gift cards
  • Hi-Co (High Coercivity): ~2750 Oe — standard for credit/debit cards, more durable
  • Standard: General-purpose setting used when card type is unknown

Match the software's coercivity setting to your card stock. Writing Hi-Co data to Lo-Co cards (or vice versa) produces unreliable results. The setting is usually under Options → Card Type or similar.

If you're working with a different device in your setup — for example, a portable reader like the MiniDX Software — the workflow is similar but the COM port and coercivity options will differ.

Troubleshooting

Device Not Recognized by Windows

Symptom: MSR606H shows as unknown device in Device Manager with a yellow triangle.

Fix: Unplug the device. Open Device Manager, right-click the unknown entry, and select Uninstall device. Reinstall the software using Run as administrator, then reconnect the MSR606H. If the problem persists, try a different USB port — avoid USB hubs and use a port directly on the motherboard.

COM Port Not Showing in Software

Symptom: The software's port list is empty or doesn't include the MSR606H's COM port.

Fix: Close the software, unplug the device, wait 10 seconds, reconnect, then relaunch the software. The port list typically refreshes on startup. If it still doesn't appear, check Device Manager to confirm Windows sees the device at all.

Garbled or Incomplete Track Data on Read

Symptom: Track data appears as random characters or is cut off.

Fix: This is almost always a swipe speed issue. Swipe at a slow, steady pace — the MSR606H is more sensitive to speed variation than newer models. Also confirm the card's stripe faces the correct direction. If the problem persists across multiple cards, the read head may need cleaning: use a cleaning card with isopropyl alcohol.

Write Fails or Data Doesn't Verify

Symptom: Card write completes but read-back shows no data or wrong data.

Fix: First, confirm your coercivity setting matches the card stock. Second, try a different card — some cards have factory defects or worn stripes. Third, check that the track fields in the software aren't empty or formatted incorrectly (Track 2 is numeric only; letters will cause encode errors).

Software Crashes on Launch

Symptom: The application opens briefly then closes, or throws a runtime error.

Fix: Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package (both x86 and x64 versions) from Microsoft's official site. Many card reader applications depend on this runtime and don't install it automatically.

If you've worked through this guide and still have issues, the problem is most likely driver-related or hardware-specific. Visit MSR606H Software to confirm you have the correct software version for your unit — there are subtle differences between MSR606H revisions that affect driver compatibility.
